The Akita Inu breed from Japan’s Akita prefecture has gained global recognition recently. To address concerns about fake pedigrees and lost documents, the Akita Inu Preservation Society is moving towards digital solutions. They have partnered with a tech company to create a secure system based on blockchain, the technology behind cryptocurrencies.
Meeting Global Demand with Digital Pedigrees
The Akita Inu Preservation Society has seen a rise in international membership, with numbers growing from 300 in 2022 to nearly 500 in 2023. This surge in interest from around the world brings the challenge of securely delivering pedigree certificates.
Traditionally, these certificates were paper-based and often got lost in transit, especially when sent overseas. The society once faced a case of falsified documents in China, emphasizing the need for a more reliable system.
Enhancing Security with Blockchain Technology
Through a partnership with Meta Akita Inc., a local IT firm, and Heirloom Inc., a US company, the preservation society has developed a cutting-edge system for issuing digital pedigree certificates using blockchain technology.
Blockchain, known for its security and transparency, establishes a digital record that traces each transaction, such as the ownership history of an Akita. This prevents tampering with data, as any unauthorized changes would be immediately detectable.
Aside from security benefits, digital certificates are now issued through a smartphone app, significantly reducing wait times for owners compared to the previous weeks-long delivery of paper documents.
Pioneering a New Era for Dog Breeds
The society’s adoption of blockchain technology serves as a model for dog breed organizations globally. As globalization continues to unite dog enthusiasts worldwide, managing pedigrees securely and efficiently becomes increasingly crucial.
This innovative approach not only protects the integrity of Akita bloodlines but also simplifies the process for international owners. The Akita Inu Preservation Society demonstrates that embracing modern technology is key to preserving tradition in the digital age.
